TikTok becomes the most downloaded application in 2023

In the first quarter of 2023, TikTok became the most downloaded application in the world, according to the ranking unveiled by data.ai. This puts it ahead of Instagram, which led in the last quarter of 2022. The rest of the scale is unchanged. The top 5 is completed by Facebook, WhatsApp, and Cap Cut, the video editing tool from ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok.

In terms of consumer spending, it is once again TikTok that tops the ranking. The Chinese social network, which defines itself as an “entertainment app,” is ahead of two other video apps: YouTube and Disney+. In terms of monthly active users, Meta largely dominates its competitors, taking the first 4 places in the ranking, respectively occupied by Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger.

More than 38 billion applications were downloaded this quarter

The data.ai report also notes that the number of app downloads increased overall this quarter. A total of 38.2 billion apps were downloaded in the last three months. The increase was particularly large among iOS users (+12% year-over-year).

In terms of spending on app stores, data.ai points to an even more consistent increase:

Mobile consumers are expected to spend more in app stores in Q1 2023 than in any other quarter, reaching $33.9 billion.
